This is cinematic excellence.
This film shows the betrayal of great friendship when Ace Hunter (hereafter known as Mr Badass) as he tries to come to terms with Duke Gurerra's betrayal although the rivalry between them still seems friendly, even after Mr Badass jumps onto Duke's tank and punches him in the face.
The Official plot synopsis describes Duke as Mr Baddass' "rival, and former military academy friend" on IMDB he is outright called "evil" however his reasons for helping the people of Gamibia to take the Republic of Sardun do not seem to be shocking. What's more the Sardun's title as a republic could mean that it is a communist nation, what's more this is an 80's film. A larger power (which seems pretty unnamed) must be helping Gamibia otherwise why would a highly trained ex- US army official be helping them, unless Duke is rogue in which case is he being paid?
I can't help but make comparisons between this and America's actions in Vietnam, at first helping the group fight off invading communists behind the scenes (with one rogue member who "officially" has nothing to do with the government) Duke does encourage the war between the two countries however, the speaker states that there is a huge amount of tyranny in the Sardun, and he seems to be a fairly simple comedy character, so I think he is trustworthy. Duke's impatient attitude is easily compared to Mr Baddass's Badassery.
Sardun could easily be a dictatorship which needed overthrowing, but Duke is not given this chance.
Duke and his friends are referred to as bandits by the British archetype, and Zara refuses to let the British forces attack the "bandits" Is this because she cares so much about peace she'll allow people she cares about to die, however if she has this power to deny conflict and the republic truly is tyrannical, then is it not possible that she is out of control? The 80's ideology doesn't allow her to have a deep character but it would make sense. She is willing to sacrifice her people if it means she keeps as many western people alive to keep herself safe.
Zara and the homely British are introduced to the story in a traditional racist and sexist fashion. Zara, the latin/mexican heroine, is first shown in a panning shot, feet to head, she wears a dangerous red dress and the whole scenario is reminiscent of some horrific mickey take on an old spy film. The British man is shown wearing tweed, and acting exactly like Michael Caine, from a film 20 years previous.
Not to say that "Dallas" from Megaforce isn't just as offensive to Americans. Zara however is the daughter of essential royalty, raised incredibly well. Megaforce then shows off its hologram and a token black person shows that his only character is that he is intelligent and we should be shocked about this. Megaforce's training (shooting balloons) ensues as they jump over the car Zara and Britishman are in.
Megaforce presents itself as a universal organization by having different characters represent their country.
Some interesting things that are said at the megaforce base "here's the egg and that's no yolk"
"10 million square km of land"
"it cost more than the pyramids"
SCUFF - supreme command united free forces. This suggests that there is such a thing as the super UN which govern all peach keeping tasks, however this doesn't mean they can't apose another free country, just as the UN did not go into afghan to help fight off the russians, it forced america to be sneaky.
Also a sudden amount of sexual tension ensues for no good reason, I can only guess scenes were removed because Mr Badass says "I didnt say you could tell everything by looking at a soilders chest" and Zara responds with "or hers". For the first time, Zara does not hold diplomatic immunity and is int he command of someone of much higher power, this could cause her to become weak for Mr Baddass for 3 reasons.
1. She has frued's elektra complex
2. She is delibertly trying to seduce her commanding officer to ensure she is not put in danger and is given favouritism
3. He is simply too baddass.
Megaforce has all the latest technology, but uses the keyboard from an atari or possibly a mac.
Duke's obsession with money could be explained by his poor background or to emulate the politicians that let him down as young general. However he was decorated in battle many times, demonstrating his bravery and skill. The question remains whether Duke is on a secret mission and must not break cover or if he truly is a mercenary.
and that's just the first 28 minutes
